What is Projector Sewing?

Projector sewing is simply projecting your sewing pattern directly onto the fabric for cutting.

Projector sewing is an evolution of using print-at-home patterns for the modern sewist.

In the past, most home sewist would buy digital print-at-home patterns. After printing the pattern at home (sometimes 40+ pages long), the pages would be aligned and attached together.

This can be rather time consuming. A group of sewists discovered in 2019 that by projecting an A0 pattern file using a projector pointing straight down, you could project a pattern directly onto the fabric, skipping the printing and attaching step!

Today, many pattern companies offer “Projector Files” of their patterns. These files are typically optimized for projecting using layered pattern files on one complete file.

Can I use any projector for sewing?

No, some projectors do not work well for sewing. Conference room and long throw projectors do not work well. Projectors with low quality image of 480p and lower often do not work well either. What are the benefits of using a projector for sewing?

There are many benefits to using a projector for sewing. One of the main ones is never needing to print a paper at home again! That means less money spent on ink and paper. Most people choose to use a projector for sewing for cost savings, time savings, space-saving, and much more!

How do I mount a projector for sewing?

There are many options for setting up a projector for sewing. These include mounting to the ceiling or wall and portable setup options. If you use an ultra-short throw projector, you may just place the projector on your cutting table or a nearby shelf. What if a pattern is too large for the projection?

There are a few ways that you can still cut out a pattern piece that is larger than your projected image. One way to do this is presented in the article, What if the pattern doesn’t fit?

Can you alter or grade your patterns when you use a projector?

Absolutely! Many people will do this digitally in programs such as Adobe Reader, Inkscape, Affinity Designer, or Adobe Illustrator. But, you can also trace and grade the pattern if you are more comfortable working with paper!
