The software for sewing with a projector has changed over the years. At the basics of projecting patterns you need a PDF reader to project patterns. In the beginning of sewing with a projector, we used Adobe Acrobat Reader. Now we have moved beyond that to programs tailored just for sewing! In this article, I’m going to go over the software programs that will calibrate your projected image, read PDF patterns, combine multi-page patterns, and so much more! All the terms and program names can be confusing for a new projection sewists, so let’s get them all straightened out!
Pattern Projector: Free Basic Software for Sewing with a Projector
Pattern Projector is a free, open-source web app designed to simplify sewing by enabling users to project digital patterns directly onto fabric, eliminating the need for paper printouts.
It offers intuitive calibration tools that allow you to align your projected image, ensuring accurate scaling. Additional features include the ability to adjust line thickness, invert colors for better visibility, rotate and flip patterns, and stitch together multi-page PDFs.
Being browser-based, it requires no installation and works across various devices, making it accessible for sewists with different setups. This web app can be downloaded to your device and used offline for short periods. It can be used on phones, tablets, Chromebooks, and computers.

Project & Cut
Project&Cut is a desktop application designed to simplify the calibration process. It is compatible with Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), and Linux. Key features include the ability to flip, rotate, and invert pattern colors, as well as toggle size layers. The software offers distinct “Preview” and “Projection” modes, to switch between entire pattern view and projected view. While it doesn’t support stitching multi-page PDFs, its intuitive interface and quick calibration tools make it ideal for both beginners and experienced sewists.
Project&Cut is available for a one-time purchase of $20, with a free 21-day trial to explore its capabilities. See a full tutorial on Project & Cut HERE.

PDF Stitcher
PDF Stitcher is a free open source program made specifically for projector sewing purposes. It is available on computers (Mac and Windows). PDF Stitcher has already been integrated into Pattern Projector, so only those using Project & Cut would need to install this program too.
You can take a regular PDF pattern file that is A4 or letter-sized and convert it to projector file format! It also allows you to add margins, delete layers, change line color and thickness. You can also run a file through PDF stitcher to “unlock” it to use in Inkscape or Affinity Designer. Inkscape: Pattern Alterations Software for Sewing with a Projector
Inkscape, a versatile vector graphics editor, stands as a powerful tool in the arsenal of creative individuals and professionals alike. Inkscape empowers users to craft stunning visuals, scalable artwork, precise designs, and now work with sewing patterns. 😊
Inkscape is a free and open source program making it an affordable vector graphics editor for many different applications!
Since sewing patterns are vector graphics at their core, a vector graphics program is especially what we need for digital alterations.
Inkscape allows you to do many of the same things in Affinity Designer, but one major difference is its inability to export layers. However, Pattern Projector has a beta feature that will read SVG files. Inkscape SVG files can export individual layers for use in Pattern Projector.
Here is a great video on getting started with Inkscape.
Affinity Designer
Affinity Designer is another popular choice for making digital sewing pattern alterations. It is a one-time cost vector graphics software available for Mac, Windows, and iPad. In fact, this is a great solution for those that project patterns from their iPad!
Affinity Designer and Inkscape are similar in many ways. Here is a complete video comparing the two programs for sewing. Which would you choose?
To see the full differences between the two programs, check out this article on Inkscape Vs. Affinity Designer!
There is also a Facebook group dedicated to using Affinity Designer for Sewing. You can also check out the Projector Sewing YouTube channel for many videos using Affinity designer to make pattern adjustments!
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is another option for digital pattern alterations. However, due to its subscription basis, many hobby sewists find it out of their price range. Adobe Illustrator is the most robust of the three vector graphics software and the top choice for pattern designers. If you are looking to start pattern drafting and selling your own makes, this might be the best choice for you.
(optional) Drivers for your Projector
Mini projectors and newer projectors do not need anything else installed on your computer. However, some older model projectors may require a driver.
If you chose to purchase a secondhand ultra-short throw projector or short throw projector, you might need to install a proper driver for your computer to read. This is usually only the case if you are connecting using a USB drive. Often nothing will need to be downloaded for HDMI connections. This is reviewed during the Calibration for UST (ultra-short throw) projectors.
If you install a casting device, such as a Chromecast, you would follow the manufacturers instructions to connect your computer to the projector.
Conclusion
That it for the main software for sewing with a projector! The absolute basic software that you need for pattern projecting is Pattern Projector or Project & Cut. From there you can branch out as you are ready to start learning digital pattern alterations!
