My kids are excited about Halloween! This year I was browsing Joann’s with my 4-year-old when he saw some Halloween fabric. He decided he NEEDED a Halloween bag out of it!

I typically buy cheap plastic containers to hold all of their Halloween treats, but they get cracked and break easily. This year, they needed a new candy holder.

I could use a pillowcase, but my kiddos are too small, and they end up dragging on the ground and get ruined. Eww!

A cloth bag will hold up well over the years.

I came up with this simple bucket tote for a Halloween bag. It is a perfect size to hold just the right amount of candy for my little guys!

You can easily adjust this to any size you need!

You can use the measurements to cut the fabric or use the FREE projector file pattern to make this simple Halloween bag.

Materials:

  • Cotton Fabric (I like using a fun Halloween Print!)
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread

*Use a ½” seam allowance

Step 1: Cut Fabric

Cut your fabric using the free projector file pattern or using the measurements below.

  • One rectangle 28” x 14” (LxW)
  • Two straps 4” x 26” (or you can use strap webbing instead cut to 26” length)

Step 2: Sew Sides of Bag

I chose to do a French seam for this bag. I like to way a French seam looks and it is very sturdy. However, you can use just a regular seam and finish the raw edges with a serger or zigzag stitch.

Step 3: (optional) Make Box Corners

If you like your bag to feel more like a “bucket”, create box corners. Line up the side seam with the center of the bottom of the bag.

Measure 2 ½” on the left side and 2 ½” on the right side of the bag. Place a little mark. Then draw a straight line to connect the marks.

Sew along this line. Again, I did a French seam by sewing the wrong sides together, flipping, and sewing again.

You can just do a regular seam with the right sides together and finish the raw edges with a serger or zigzag stitch.

Step 4: Hem the top

Next, we will hem to the top of the bag. Iron down ¼”, then fold and iron another 1”.

Sew down the hem close to the fold line.

Step 5: Make straps

If you are using strap webbing, you can skip this step.

Fold the short ends in a ¼” and iron.

Fold the strap material in half lengthwise. Iron well.

Next, fold the edges to meet in the middle fold line. Iron well.

Finally, with the edges still folded, fold the strap in half again and iron it. Your strap should now be about 1” wide.

Step 6: Sew on Straps

Now you are ready to sew straps onto the bag!

Measure about 2” from the side seam of the bag. Pin the strap in place on the inside of the bag.

Repeat with the opposite side and the other strap.

Attach the strap by sewing a 1” square on the strap at the hem. Make an “X” in the middle of the square to reinforce.

Step 7: Enjoy!

You finished your bag! Enjoy taking the bag trick-or-treating! You can embellish with a vinyl design or applique.
