How to Set Up and Mount the Optoma ML1050ST
During this initial trial, I set up this projector on my table facing a wall. However, the mini size of this short throw makes it easily manageable. This projector does have an offset. I was able to mount it on the wall or ceiling and pointed directly down at the table. There was little to no “dead space” in the offset. This was great since my table was all the way against the wall.
We make the perfect ceiling mount for the Optoma ML1050ST right here at Projector Sewing! This mount was designed by a sewist for sewists!
Other great options for this projector include using a tension rod and tripods. Amazon single-point mounts can also be used to connect this projector to the wall if you cannot mount to the ceiling.
Before permanently mounting, I suggest holding the projector while it is on to see where the offset is. Remember you will need to mount it on the long side of the table and not directly above the cutting surface. A typical ball joint mount should work well. This projector is lightweight which should make mounting easier and cause less strain on the mount. You will need to account for the HDMI and power cord when mounted.

Tension Rod Mount
This is another great option for mounting your Optoma ML1050ST for sewing! This uses a curtain tension rod and pole clamp.
Tripod
Any tripod that extends to the height that you need will work for this projector. This tripod goes to 50″ high and is a good price.
How to Connect to the Optoma ML1050ST Projector
HDMI is the best way to connect your computer to the Optoma ML1050ST projector for sewing. If you want a wireless connection, you will need to buy the optional wireless dongle or use Google chrome cast.

Projected Image Size for Sewing
If you don’t have a lot of height between the ceiling and cutting surface, than a short throw is the way to go! I love that this short throw gives a bright and large image at such a short distance. It’s even better that it is a mini short throw that is lightweight and easy to handle.
Distance | Image Size (inches) | Image Size (cm) |
28″ | 35″x22″ | 88cm x 55cm |
35″ | 44″x27″ | 112cm x 70cm |
40″ | 50″x31″ | 128cm x 80cm |
Pros and Cons
Now that I have gone through the nitty and gritty details, let’s get down to if this is the projector for you. Some of the strengths of this projector are its size, brightness, and throw ratio. The downs are that it is pricey and doesn’t have a built-in wireless connection.
This projector is ideal for someone who doesn’t have a large distance available between cutting surface and ceiling. Or for someone that would like a mounted projector that gives a very large image. It is also ideal for cutting in rooms that may be on the brighter side. I also love the mini size of this projector. Some short throws can be very large and heavy, making them difficult to maneuver and mount. There is also not a large offset with this projector. It can be placed on the long side of the table and project directly down onto the table. The higher up it is placed, the more noticeable the offset is, so always test out the projection before making holes!
The Optoma ML1050ST is not a good choice for someone who likes screen casting from their table or phone and for those using Miracast. The best mode of connection to this projector is by HDMI. An while it can read USB and MicroSD cards, you cannot access pattern layers and zoom.
You can buy an adapter that will make this projector wireless or use a Google Chrome cast device. The other downside is that this projector is significantly more money than a mini projector such as the Akiyo Mini Projector.
Short throw projectors use different lens technology that does cost more. Typically, they do run more than mini projectors (because you get a lot more…). If you are looking for a more buget friendly short throw projector, then checkout the AAXA SLC450.
