Once you have chosen a projector, you are ready to get a compatible mount. The biggest issue with mounts are that most of them are not constructed to point the projector straight down. Also, some mounts do not utilize the space from projector to ceiling.

Here are some mounts that work and some do it yourself solutions.

Ball Joint Mount

You will see many people recommend these cheap ball joint mounts on Amazon. They can work, especially for lighter projectors. However, I have found that they really aren’t that great for anything over 2 lbs. If you have a small mini projector that is less than 2 lbs., then this is the perfect solution for you! Just mount it on the ceiling over your cutting mat and calibrate your projector.

Camera Mounts

Often referred to as spotlight or security camera mounts, these work pretty well for us. Security camera mounts can be purchased at your local hardware store or on Amazon. This Arkon camera mount has been used by some in the sewing community with good results.

3D Printed

Did you know you can 3D print a mount for your projector. A user of the Vivimage Explorer 2 created a 3D print file on Thingiverse to mount their projector. The file is available to anyone who would like to print their own. This can be easily adapted to other sizes.

Basic Niche

Basic Niche is a company that saw a need and filled it by creating low profile projector mounts for sewing projectors. If you want something that is no hassle and you know will work well, then check them out. Each model is projector specific, so if you do not have one of these projectors, you will need to choose a different mounting solution.

DIY Mount

There are so many DIY mounting options! In fact, the sky is the limit! One of the simplest (and cheapest) DIY mounts are using shelf brackets and zip ties. Buy 1-2 “L” shaped shelf brackets and some long zip ties. Check the side of the bracket that the projector will sit closest to the ceiling and still be secure on the bracket. With help, use the hole on the bracket to screw the projector in place. Level and stabilize the projector with 2 zipties.

However, you can see this is not very clean with the zip ties. Other options include 2 L brackets with a flat piece of wood connecting them. Then screw the projector onto the flat wood.

If you or someone you know is handy with tools, then you can build a homemade box similar to the Basic Niche box.

Conclusion

There are many different mounts that you can use or create for your projector. If you have a small and light projector, the simple Amazon ball joint mount works great. Basic Niche mounts will look stylish in any room and get you up and running in no time. Do-it-yourself mounts are a great option that can be customized to your projector. They can be made from shelf brackets, wood, or even 3D printed!
