If you’ve been looking into the Magcubic HY310 for sewing with a projector, you’ve probably come across its slightly upgraded sibling—the HY310X. At first glance, these projectors are nearly identical, so is the small price difference worth it? In this post, we’ll compare the two side by side with sewing in mind so you can make the best decision for your setup.

📦 What’s the Same?
Let’s start with the basics—both the HY310 and HY310X have the same core specs:
- Ultra compact and lightweight
- Great throw ratio for small sewing spaces (0.8:1)
- Compatible with calibration for sewing
- Same native resolution and Android operating system
- Both support auto keystone correction and auto focus
- Both have HDMI or wireless Screencast options
If you’ve already read my full review of the HY310, you’ll know it’s a budget-friendly and great pick for projector sewing. The HY310X builds on that solid foundation, with just a few differences.

HY310X
The Magcubic HY310X is the companion projector to the HY310. Both are budget projectors that work well for sewing.
🔍 Key Differences Between the HY310 and HY310X
| Feature | HY310 | HY310X | |
| Throw Ratio | 0.8 | 0.8 | |
| Brightness | 86 Lux | 112 Lux | |
| Weight | 1.3 lbs. | 1.1 lbs. | |
| Contrast | 10,000:1 | 10,000:1 | |
| Speaker | Base | Integrated | |
| Price | about $90 | about $100 | |
| Remote | Voice Control | Gyro Sensor* |
*During testing the mouse became unresponsive and I had to use the HY310 remote instead.
The other difference relates to the speakers that are not used for sewing. The HY310 has a speaker in the base, whereas the HY310X the speaker is integrated into the main part of the projector. The location of the speaker had no impact on the sewing experience.
The wireless connection with the HY310X did seem to be more stable than when I tested the HY310, but they are equipped with the same connection options. This could have been caused by outside factors.

💡 Real-World Sewing Differences
In actual sewing use, the differences are subtle. Yes, the HY310X is technically brighter, but the visual improvement is modest. If you sew in a room with some ambient light, you may notice the HY310X makes your pattern lines a bit easier to see. But if you’re sewing in a darker or controlled-light space, the difference might not be noticeable at all.

🧵 Should You Upgrade to the HY310X?
Here’s a quick breakdown to help you decide:
- Choose the HY310 if:
- You’re sewing in a dark or low-light room
- You want the most budget-friendly option
- Choose the HY310X if:
- You sew in medium-light environments and want clearer lines
- You don’t mind paying a bit more for a slightly improved experience
How to Mount for Sewing
There are many ways to mount this lightweight projector for sewing. It has a standard 1/4″ mounting hole on the bottom. This projector can be mounted to the ceiling, wall, desk clamp, or tripod for sewing. I recommend at least 39″ between lens and sewing table for the minimum recommended image size for patterns (A1).

Final Thoughts
Both the HY310 and HY310X are great projectors for sewing, especially for small spaces. If you already own the HY310 or even the HY300, there’s no urgent need to upgrade. But if you’re buying new and want a little extra visibility, the HY310X might be the smarter long-term choice.
Either way, you’re getting an excellent little projector that can help you ditch printing and paper patterns for good.
