You’ve seen the hype and you are ready to join the projector sewing movement! But, wait? What do you need to start sewing with a projector?
To get started sewing with a projector, there are three basic things you NEED. Good news is that you may already have these things at home and can get started at little or no cost!
The three things you need to start sewing with a projector are a projector, device to project from, and a PDF reader with zoom on your device.

Do you already have a projector at home and want to know if it will work for sewing? Set the projector up at the same distance from a wall that you have between your ceiling and cutting surface. In the world of sewing with a projector, you will need something to cast your pattern to the projector. Most people already have something that they can use to project patterns! There really isn’t a need to go buy something new, unless you need an excuse. 😉
Devices that people use include computers, iPads, Chromebooks, and phones.
I prefer to use a laptop to project from because I can move it close to my cutting table when I need. The large screen is nice for making pattern alterations.
If you don’t have a computer, you can use a tablet, Chromebook, iPad, or phone. However, these are a little bit trickier to work with than computers. The small screens on phones can make it especially difficult when calibration and maneuvering patterns.
Some programs only run on computers such as PDF Stitcher, Inkscape, and Afinity V3.
If you plan on getting a new laptop, make sure to get one that has an HDMI port since that is the preferred way to connect many projectors to a computer! But, you can also connect to computers wirelessly if you desire.

Other Helpful Items to Have for Sewing with a Projector
The three main things needed for sewing with a projector are a projector, mount, and device for projecting. However, the following list includes other items that are nice to have!
Table
A table is a very integral part of calibration, projection, and sewing. Of course, if you are planning on cutting on the floor, your “table” may be a board that you lay down to create a flat surface.
Ideally your table will be around the same width as your projection or cutting area. This will make it easy to cut across the entire projection area. You will definitely need your table to at least be the size of your cutting mat(s).
You can get a fancy table specifically for sewing. Make one out of shelves and counter from Ikea. Or use a heavy-duty folding table. I have also seen sewists go to their local hardware store and just get a plain, flat door to use as a tabletop!
I have successfully used a heavy duty folding table for years! It might not be a Pinterest worthy table, but it works well. If you get a folding table, do not get one that folds in the middle! This is not great for projection!

Rotatory cutting mat and blade
Do you have a rotatory cutting mat that is at least A1 (36”x24”) size? If not, I suggest you get one! Not only does it make cutting from a projector much easier, but it is also the perfect grid to use in conjunction with the calibration tool.
Are you getting a short throw or ultra-short throw for a large image size? If you will have a large image size, then it is very helpful to have a rotatory cutting mat that covers most of the image area. You can purchase a large A0 sized mat or put two A1 sized mats together.

Long HDMI cable
A long HDMI cable is necessary for any ceiling mounted projector. Consider the height of your ceiling and where your laptop/computer is located.
Typically, the 15 ft. HDMI cable works great! But, if you are further away, they do come in 25ft size.
If you have an Ultra-short throw or short throw, it really depends where your projector is in relation to your computer. Take a look at your planned set up to determine is you need an HDMI cable longer than the typical 6 ft. cable.
Again, make sure your computer has an HDMI port or get an adapter to fit. Some older projector models do not have HDMI ports, so adjust what you need to buy in relation to the projector you will be using.

Long Power Cable
Projector power cables that come with the system are typically not very long. You will need an extension cord or longer AC power cable. A longer AC power cable is great for projectors that are mounted up high, especially if you want to use a cable concealer. So, plan on an extension cord or longer power cable to get from a projector to an outlet. Another option is to install a plug into the ceiling. But, buying a longer cable is definitely the simpler option!
Mini projectors use the AC Power cord with two prongs. Epson ultra-short throw projectors use the three prong computer cable. Both products are show below.

Pattern Weights
Cutting out paper patterns, you had the option of using weights or pinning the pattern to the fabric. Now, the purpose of a pattern weight is to hold your fabric still while you cut.
If you are using an ultra-short throw, then a low-profile weight is best so the image isn’t blocked. Read about some of the best pattern weights for projector sewing here.
You can purchase weights, collect fancy rocks, use floor tile samples, or anything you can come up with!

Cable concealer
Is a cable concealer required? No. It is a good idea for safety for cables on the floor.
For hanging cables, it does tidy up all the cables hanging around. A cable concealer is a quick and easy way to hide cables hanging for the ceiling. It’s not a matter of function, but aesthetics.
However, for those with cables running across the floor a cable concealer will reduce the tripping hazard. If you don’t want to buy a cable concealer right now, please cover the cords with duct tape to prevent tripping!

Curtains
Do you have a window in your sewing room? Curtains will help to create a dim environment when cutting patterns during the day. A darker room will make it easier to see the lines on your projection. A pair of blackout curtains can make the difference between being able to cut during the day or not.
