Video Review of the HY300X

Overview

The HY300X is another projector available from the Magcubic HY300 series projector. The HY300X builds off the useful features of the HY300 and gives a slight step up. The HY300X is significantly brighter than the HY300, but still best suited for a dim environment. The projector has a great throw ratio of 0.9, which means you can get an 36″ wide projection from only 33″ from lens to table. Overall, this projector is a great option for sewing.

Features

The HY300X includes the necessary features for a good sewing projector. Let’s jump right in and overview the features and how they relate for sewing.

Wireless or HDMI: The projector can connect to phones, tablets, and computers either with an HDMI cable or wirelessly using the screencast app.

Electronic Focus: The focus is controlled manually through the projector remote using electronic focus. This makes it great for adjusting focus from a distance.

Throw Ratio 0.9: The lens on this projector is a big plus. Although it doesn’t get the 0.8 throw ratio as in the listing, I did get a throw ratio of about 0.9. The minimum distance I recommend placing this projector from lens to table is 36″. The higher you mount it, the larger the image will be. Mounted at 44″ from lens to table will give you about 48″ wide image, and at 54″ from lens to table you will get about 60″ wide projection. You may lose brightness the further away this projector is mounted. I would avoid mounting this more than 80″ from lens to table.

Brightness: The HY300X is also significantly brighter with 115 Lux Lumens, than the HY300 at 86 Lux Lumens. However, it is not quite as bright as the new HY310X, which was tested at 129 Lux Lumens at the same distance. Budget projectors are still best used in a dim environment with curtains to block sun from windows.

Native Resolution 720p: At a native resolution of 720p, this projector is a balance between budget and more expensive features. Projectors with a 720p resolution are good for sewing. You can see the pattern lines, but keep in mind that smaller text may have “ghosting” or become fuzzy. Higher resolution projectors will typically cost more, but offer clearer text.

Operation: The operating system of the HY300X seemed to be very stable. Between sessions, all settings on the projector were preserved . There was no “blinking” of the screen while using it for sewing.

How to Mount the HY300X for Sewing

Since the HY300X is compact and lightweight, there are several mounting options. Ideally, this projector should be centered above your cutting mat because it has a 0 percent offset. However, by using PatternProjector.com to project your patterns, you can easily project at an angle if needed.

Permanent mounting is great because you do not need to recalibrate your projector during sewing sessions. When the distance between the projector and cutting surface stays the same, calibration will continue to be accurate. Moving the cutting mat left/right or up/down may make the calibration lines “look” off, but the size of the image should remain constant. Read this article on calibration for more information on calibrating your projector for the first time.
