First Impressions: Upgrades within Budget

Compared to many projectors out there on the market, the Magcubic HY310 has qualities that make it a great projector for sewing. The projector is slightly more rectangle and has a 180-degree adjustable base. The HY310 is compact and lightweight, making it a great option for a variety of setups. It also has a great throw ratio of 0.8:1. The HY310 is brighter than the HY300, but is best used in a dim environment. The price is also kept very reasonable. Overall, the HY310 makes a great choice for cutting out sewing patterns in a variety of sewing room setups.
Pros: Why Sewists Will Love the HY310 Projector
✅ Size: Lightweight weighing 0.61kg, means that this projector can be easily mounted to the ceiling, wall, or tripod with ease.
✅ Wireless Connections: In addition to HDMI connections, wireless connections are included with the HY310. Enter your network information, then connect to Apple and Android devices using the built-in screencast apps. This projector also has Office apps built-in for displaying presentations, documents, and photos directly from a USB drive. The USB connection is not recommended for patterns as there is no interface for calibration.
✅ Decent image quality: This projector has a 1920×1080 pixel native resolution and the lens offers exceptional clarity and upgrade over the 720p of the HY300. The projector is noticeably brighter than the HY300 and more crisp lines. Using a LUX lumens meter, I tested this projector to have 86 LUX Lumens. The HY300 was tested to have about 79.5 LUX lumens. This projector is best used in a dim room (some light okay), but you may struggle to see lines in a bright room. You may notice some blurry lines around the edges, especially if the projector is not parallel to your cutting surface.

✅ Throw ratio of 0.8: Ideal mounting height for the HY310 is between 30”-80”. Most sewists should get a great image size in their sewing rooms. The minimum recommended distance is 33” from lens to table. This will give you about 36” wide image. At 40” from lens to table you should get about 48” wide (A0) image. The higher the projector is mounted, the larger the image will be. Higher distances may result in slightly less brightness.
✅ Streaming: Although sewing projectors are not typically used for TV or movies, with the HY310 you have the option for dual purpose! The Magcubic HY310 projector comes with all of your favorite streaming apps including Netflix, Prime, Disney+, Hulu, and more built in! Bring on the movie nights!
✅ Worldwide shipping: Magcubic projectors are available worldwide through Walmart, Amazon, the Magcubic website, and many more.
Cons: What to Consider Before Buying
➖ Unstable wireless connections: While testing this projector, I did notice that it had some difficulty with the Miracast connection. The screen looked visibly glitchy, froze, or lagged. This can vary depending on the device you are using and the strength of your Wi-Fi signal. For the most consistent connection, I still recommend using an HDMI cable.
➖ Best used in dim lighting: Like many projectors, it performs best in a dark or dimly lit room. I found the image was significantly better in a dim room. If you plan on using this projector in the day, put curtains on the window or block direct light. Of course, if you are using programs like Pattern Projector, you can thicken the pattern lines to help them become more visible. Changing the projector settings to increase the contrast and lower the brightness can also help with pattern visibility.
➖ Short Power Cable: The power cable that comes with the projector is very short. The plug into the unit is very unique to Magcubic projectors and they do not sell longer power supply cables at this time. You will be unable to buy a longer power cable anywhere. An extension cable will be needed to plug the unit in or use a power outlet close to the projector.
➖ Auto Focus Settings: It was discovered that the HY310 auto focus feature resets each time the projector is turned off. When you go to the settings and toggle off auto trapezoid (kestone) and Auto Focus, the Auto Trapezoid will remain off, but auto focus turns back on during startup. Most of the time the auto focus feature doesn’t affect sewing calibration. With the auto focus feature on and a consistent cutting surface, I found my calibration was unchanged. However, if objects are on your cutting surface, this may cause the projector to focus on different things during startup. The focus may shrink or enlarge the screen slightly. You may need to readjust the corners of your calibration before cutting. This would not affect portable setups where you will be re-calibrating during each setup anyway. *The HY310X saved settings for both focus and keystone adjustments and did not exhibit this same issue.

Tips for Getting the Best Experience
- Turn off auto keystone for accurate calibration when using Pattern Projector or Project & Cut software. The auto keystone correction will interfere with how these programs adjust the image for calibration. Go into the settings of the projector and toggle Keystone correction off.
- Turn off auto focus: Auto focus is a great feature when using the projector for movies. If the projector is moved, it will refocus the image. But, for sewing, when you are constantly moving under the projection, it is not helpful. Keep in mind that there are several users that leave auto focus on without adverse affects. If you find the projector re-focusing during cutting, turning off this feature can help. During projector startup, the projector will focus. If your projector and cutting surface are consistent, this should not affect calibration. But, some users will need to update sewing calibration after projector focusing.
- Extension cord: The power cord for this projector is very different than many other projectors that I have seen. If you don’t have a plug nearby or in the ceiling, you will need an extension power cable.
- Consider mounting options: The Magcubic HY310 has a standard ¼” mounting screw hole. This means it can be used in a variety of setups including ceiling mounts, wall mounted, desk clamp mounts, and tripods.
- HDMI: If connecting using an HDMI cable and mounting close to the ceiling, I recommend getting a 90 degree HDMI cable or adapter.
