Looking for a quick way to calculate which projector is right for your sewing setup? Then, we’ve got you covered! This tool will recommend a projector specific to your sewing space and desired image size!
Below you will find a sewing projector throw calculator. This calculator will find the best projector throw ratio for your room and desired image width.
You will need to measure the distance between your cutting table and ceiling for “distance”. In “Image Width”, you are to put in the width of your desired cutting image.
Your “image size” can be the long side of your cutting mat, or the length of your most common cut pattern piece. Keep in mind, larger images may limit the type of projector you can get. We recommend measuring a pant pattern piece you have as a good estimate of the image width (Typically this is about 45″ (114cm).
In the form below, enter your distance and desired image width.
This will calculate your desired throw ratio. Choose any projector with that throw ratio or LESS to get the image size you desire! It’s that simple!
Next, checkout the links below to make sure you are getting the right projector. Using my links also helps me to continue to offer free resources! Thank you.

*If you get the message “This width needs a placement distance outside what this projector supports”, that just means to get the exact width measurement you want you get a projector placement that is outside the minimum or maximum throw distance. However, most of the time, you don’t need the image that exact width (it was your minimum desired width), and placing the projector higher will give you a larger image size. An image size slightly larger than you need, will still work for sewing!

Ultra-short throw projectors are the largest projectors used for sewing. They generally sit on your cutting table, nearby shelf, or on a TV stand. Bulbs can always be replaced on ultra-short throw projectors. These should be purchased used on a marketplace, school surplus sale, or eBay. Epson models 475 and above are the most popular choices.
